What is 'Service Availibility?'

When you look in the “Current Bill Information” section of your electric bill, you may notice a line item reading “Service Availability.” That charge is nothing new, and has been there since the early 1980s.

REMINDER -- OSMOSE CONTRACTORS ARE WORKING ON SYSTEM

Members are reminded that inspectors from Osmose are out on the cooperative system inspecting poles. All inspectors will carry identification badges designating them as a contractor for WCE, as well as have "Contractor for West Central Electric" signs on their trucks. As always, if you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact the cooperative at 800-491-3803.

DO YOU HAVE A GENERATOR?

Do you have a generator? Many people keep a generator for emergency situations when the power goes out, but did you know a generator can be dangerous to our linemen -- those who are out restoring your power?

Members with portable generators should make sure the generators are installed only by a qualified electrician, are placed outdoors, and are totally isolated from electric cooperative lines. Generators that are not properly installed can back-feed current onto electric cooperative lines, endangering linemen working to restore power.

Make it a safe winter by being prepared and taking the necessary precautions to keep you, and us, safe.

WINTER STORM SAFETY

Snow and ice storms are an inevitable part of the winter season. However, they can lead to downed power lines and outages. Remember the following tips to stay safe and warm should you find yourself in the dark after a severe winter event:

  • Never touch a fallen power line, and assume all wires on the ground are electrically charged. Call West Central Electric at 800-491-3803 or hte local authorities to report it immediately. Avoid contact with overhead lines during cleanup and other activities.
  • In the event of an outage, an alternate heating source—such as a fireplace, propane space heater, or wood stove—may be used. Extreme caution should be taken.

REMEMBER -- ENERGY EFFICIENCY DOESN'T TAKE A HOLIDAY

If you are going to be away from home for the holidays, or any other occasion for that matter, give your home's energy use a break as well.

Here's how to give energy a vacation:

**BE AWARE OF SCAMMERS**

If you receive a phone call from someone identifying himself/herself as being from the power company, and you are not sure if it is legitimate, or sounds suspicious, hang up and call WCE yourself. ALWAYS contact us yourself if you have a question about a phone call you receive, and NEVER give out personal information such as credit card numbers or account numbers to someone over the phone. WCE does not take payments over the phone. We have a dedicated payment line that you may call, as well as a variety of other ways to make your payment.
